Historical Significance
Introduction. Amsterdam is a very old city and used to be called Amstelerdam. Even today, the inhabitants still call it Mokkum. The city is named after a 13th-century dam in the River Amstel and after it was granted city rights in the 1300s, the city soon developed into a prosperous trading city.
Nightlife
When it comes to nightlife in Amsterdam, there are venues, dance festivals and club nights to suit every taste! DJs and live artists keep the crowd going with everything from techno and house to hip-hop, funk and jazz.
Local Transportation Tips
Day Trips and Excursions
Get a break from Amsterdam with a scenic day trip on a 6.5 hour guided tour around the Dutch countryside. Start with a 20-minute drive to the windmill village of Zaanse Schans, situated on the banks of the river Zaan and home to the original 18th and 19th-century architecture, including several still functioning windmills and wooden houses.
Language and Communication
Dutch is the major and sole official language of the country. There are, however, a couple of others that are spoken in certain regions – most notably, West Frisian (or Frysk), several dialects of Dutch Low Saxon and Limburgish.
